  2. Catch MaynardFest in downtown Maynard on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
  3. Spend a fall day at Longfellow’s Wayside Inn in Sudbury: Colonial Faire on September 26 and Apple Fest Family Day on October 3.

  5. Shop the last outdoor farmers markets in Framingham, Natick, Ashland, Wayland, Holliston and Acton before they close for the season in October.

Peak foliage in MetroWest typically lands in the middle to late weeks of October, with color holding into early November in low, wet areas along the Sudbury and Assabet rivers.

Why Fall Is the Best Season to Explore MetroWest

MetroWest is that stretch of Massachusetts west of Boston where the density drops away and the conservation land begins. You get colonial commons, working farms, rail trails built on old rail beds, and river valleys all inside a 30 minute drive of one another.

Here’s is the VIP Group's town by town guide.

Framingham: Trails, Gardens and the Region’s Biggest Farmers Market

Framingham is the hub of MetroWest, and it punches above its weight in the fall.

  • Callahan State Park: 800+ acres of woods, meadows and pond loops on the north side of town. Wide, well-marked trails make it forgiving for kids and dogs.
  • Garden in the Woods is the Native Plant Trust’s botanical garden, where fall color runs to sourwood, blueberry and native maples rather than the usual suspects.
  • Cushing Memorial Park  the former estate grounds are an easy stroll and a favorite for family photos once the trees turn.
  • Framingham Farmers Market: Thursdays at Framingham Centre Common on Edgell Road, running through October 8, 2026. In 2025 it welcomed up to 90 vendors weekly and hosted more than 31,250 customers, making it one of the largest markets in the state.

Natick: Apple Picking, a Wildlife Sanctuary and a Year Round Common

Natick is the single best answer to “where can I go apple picking near Boston without driving an hour?”

  • Belkin Family Lookout Farm (89 Pleasant Street South, South Natick) one of the oldest continuously working farms in the country. Fall u-pick runs from early September with Asian pears, 11 varieties of apples and more than 25,000 pumpkins, plus farm animals, hay rides, a corn maze and play areas. There’s a taproom and outdoor dining for the adults, and cider donuts for everyone. Buy tickets online in advance, fall weekends sell out.
  • Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary (Mass Audubon)  boardwalks over marsh and beaver ponds off Route 16. Quiet, and excellent for birding as migration picks up.
  • Cochituate State Park shoreline trails on the Natick/Wayland line, best in the low light of late afternoon.
  • Natick Farmers Market: Saturdays, 9am–1pm, year round. It sits on Natick Common through September, then moves across to Common Street for October.
  • Natick Center TCAN (The Center for Arts in Natick) runs live music and film all fall, which makes for an easy rainy-Saturday plan B.

Sudbury: Colonial History, Two Signature Fall Events

Sudbury does fall the way New England is supposed to.

  • Longfellow’s Wayside Inn the oldest operating inn in the country, with a working grist mill, the Martha Mary Chapel and grounds worth an hour of wandering on their own.
    • Colonial Faire & Muster of Fife and Drum — Saturday, September 26, 2026. A colonial encampment with militia demonstrations, traditional crafts, fife and drum music and a parade.
    • Apple Fest Family Day — Saturday, October 3, 2026. The Wayside Inn Foundation’s signature fall celebration, with hayrides, a petting zoo, craft and artisan vendors, seasonal activities and food.
  • Sudbury Valley Trustees properties and the trails around Nobscot Reservation on the Framingham line give you real elevation and long views.

Holliston: Rail Trail, Harvest Fair and Small-Town September

Holliston stacks its two best days back to back in September.

  • Celebrate Holliston — Saturday, September 19, 2026. The town’s street festival.
  • Holliston Harvest Fair — Sunday, September 20, 2026, on the Holliston Historical Society grounds at 547 Washington Street.
  • Upper Charles Rail Trail paved, flat and shaded, running through the center of town. It’s the most stroller and bike friendly foliage walk in MetroWest.
  • Holliston Farmers Market: Tuesdays, 3–7pm at 24 Water Street, through October 13, 2026.
  • Fiske’s General Store in Holliston Center is the kind of place people move here for.

Ashland: A Reservoir Loop and a Street Faire

  • Ashland Dragonfly Street Faire — Saturday, October 3, 2026. Downtown Ashland fills up with vendors, food and music.
  • Ashland State Park the reservoir loop is roughly 3 miles, mostly flat, and the water reflection doubles the color in mid-October. This is the highest-value-per-mile foliage walk on this list.
  • Ashland Town Forest and the Warren Woods trails for something quieter.
  • Ashland Farmers Market: Saturdays, 9am–1pm at 125 Front Street, through October.

Wayland: Rivers, Marsh and a Garden Center That Does Fall Right

  • Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge (Wayland unit) marsh, and the Sudbury River. Golden marsh grass is its own kind of fall color, and the light in late October is exceptional.
  • Russell’s Garden Center (397 Boston Post Road)  a long standing MetroWest fall destination for mums, pumpkins, cornstalks and holiday decor. It also hosts the Wayland Farmers Market, Wednesdays 12–4pm through October 7, 2026.
  • Heard Farm Conservation Area: open fields, river frontage and one of the better sunset spots in town.
  • Mainstone Farm trails for a longer walk through active farmland.

Maynard: The Best Downtown Fall Festival in the Region

  • MaynardFest — Saturday, October 3, 2026. A downtown tradition since 1993, filling Main and Nason Streets with more than 120 vendors, local businesses, sidewalk sales, food and free family entertainment. If you go to one street festival this fall, make it this one.
  • Assabet River Rail Trail paved and continuous through downtown Maynard toward Acton and Stow. Park at Mill & Main and ride out.
  • Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge over 2,000 acres of woods, wetlands and old military bunkers. Genuinely interesting to walk.
  • Mill & Main the old Digital Equipment Corporation mill complex, now restaurants, breweries and offices along the river.
  • The Sanctuary on Main Street runs live music and community events all fall.

Acton: Parks, Trails and Family Weekends

  • NARA Park: beach, pond loop, amphitheater and open lawn. It’s the town’s living room in the fall.
  • Acton Arboretum: 60+ acres with a boardwalk through a wetland, plus rhododendron and wildflower gardens. Small, and worth the stop.
  • Great Hill Conservation Area a short climb with a view, and one of the few real overlooks nearby.
  • Discovery Museum the reliable answer to a cold, rainy October Saturday with kids.
  • Acton-Boxborough Farmers Market: Sundays, 10am–1pm at 19 Elm Street, through October 11, 2026.
